Maria Sharapova was born on April 19, 1987 in Nyagan, a town in the Siberian region of Russia. In 1989, the family moved to the Black Sea resort town of Sochi. When she was 4 years old, a chance encounter changed her life. She met with the father of tennis champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov, and the man gave her a racket. From that moment, she started hitting tennis balls. The game soon became a passion for her.

Why we want her- Stop us if you heard this one... She may only be a teenager, but Sharapova's very mature for her age. She has an animated personality that makes her fun to watch on the tennis court. The fact that she happens to look like she could moonlight as a runway model doesn't hurt.

Personality- A perfectionist, she is disciplined and claims she doesn't have time to get her driver's license, never mind a boyfriend. She is mature beyond her years and certainly has the patience to achieve her objective.

Talent- She joined the Bollettieri Tennis Academy when she was 7 and has worked with the likes of Michael Baroch and the notoriously cranky tennis guru Robert Lansdorf, a man who has helped the games of Lindsay Davenport, Tracy Austin and Pete Sampras, to name a few.

Accomplishments- In 2004, Maria won her first Grand Slam title when she beat Serena Williams at Wimbledon.
